Michael Yaffe is the David H. Koch Professor of Science and Professor of Biology and Biological Engineering at MIT, where he has been a faculty member since 2000. He is also an attending trauma surgeon at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. Professor Yaffe earned his doctoral degree in biophysical chemistry and his medical degree from Case Western Reserve University. He completed residencies in general surgery and surgical oncology, at University Hospitals of Cleveland and New England Deaconess Hospital, respectively, and a fellowship in surgical critical care at Harvard Medical School's Harvard-Longwood Critical Care Program. He was a postdoctoral fellow with Lewis Cantley in the Department of Cell Biology at Harvard Medical School. In recognition of his accomplishments, he received the Howard Hughes Physician Scientist Award, the Burroughs Wellcome Career Development Award, and the MIT Science Teaching Prize. A founder of Consensus Pharmaceuticals, the DNA Repair Company, and Merrimack Pharmaceuticals, Professor Yaffe is also the Chief Scientific Editor of Science Signaling. He serves as a Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve Medical Corps and in 2015 received the Bronze Star Medal from the U.S. Army for his service as a trauma surgeon on active duty in Afghanistan. In 2017, Professor Yaffe became the inaugural scientific director of the MIT Center for Precision Cancer Medicine.
